MUSICAL REVIEW: One Man Musical ★★★★

After a rip-roaring success up in Edinburgh for the fringe last year, sisters Nicola and Rosie Dempsey, famously known as Flo & Joan, a specular musical comedy duo, have brought their ‘One Man Musical’ to The Soho Boulevard. With George Fouracres leading at the front, encompassing as one of our greatest living composers and lyricists, this mean musical feat is nothing short of extraordinary, and the audience would vouch for it given the hysterics and ludicracy that draws you in (just don’t know in expecting something serious, okay dears.)

As as a frontman, Fouracres portrays Andrew Lloyd Webber (yes, we are risking the ‘legal mindfield’ as set out at the start of the show) with such wit and flamboyance that you are completely on board with his whimsical manner, and the way he which he wonders (and SKATES) around the stage, much to the nervousness of the front row of attendees (though that would make a brilliant anecdote…).  In the musical numbers, that have been written by Flo & Joan, and enhanced by Rhys Thomas’ rather enigmatic designs, you are thrusted into the flavourings of just some of Llyod Webber’s most recognisable productions.

Whilst there isn’t quite yet an announcement of a cast recording on the horizon (the post show tune was certainly a demounment based off the venture we had just sat through), you will definitely find yourself humming just some of the jaunty tunes long after you have left the ‘spaceship / cruise’ vibe that the boulevard has to offer… though maybe I’d stay away from singing the cat’s inspired tune out loud.

One Man Musical runs at The Soho Boulevard until Friday 7th March 2025.
