ED FRINGE 2024 REVIEW: THOR THE WALRUS

THOR THE WALRUS

Playground 1, Zoo Playground

In November 2022, on the coast of North Holland, Sweden, news outlets went into a state of shock when a three year old walrus, nicknamed Thor, washed up on the shore, and became an attraction. WattWhereWhy, a UK based theatre company, have now taken it upon themselves to expand the life of Thor, giving the mammal an origin story with family members popping up, and a hilarious ensemble of side characters, all performed by five actors, that try and give this true story some heart to the headlines.

From newscasters to seagulls, weather reporters to sea creatures, it’s a great array of forging a bigger journey for the nicknamed walrus, nd mostly works to great responses from the audience; a few broadcasts do become a little stale, and the separate point of focus for the presenters isn’t consistent enough, but the multiple interviewees the two portray is credible. Simple lighting also allows for you to enjoy the performance; whilst the show doesn’t really say anything new about the reports from 2022, it’s still a comforting watch that has fun, and you can see this in abundance from those who are bringing the show to life.
