ED FRINGE 2024 REVIEW: THE WATER BABIES

THE WATER BABIES
Upper Theatre, The Space UK Niddry Street

Adapted by The University of Gloucestershire, Charles Kingsley’s 1863 novel, The Water Babies, has been brought to life through visual songs and storytelling, that follows young Tom and his journey of discovering his Water Baby status. As an early morning show at the fringe, the audience, who were mostly made up of young families in this performance, could clearly been since transfixed to the tale, as the ensemble moved from locations and characters with swift direction, and where we met a plethora of creature, who were mostly welcoming, along the way. For a show that doesn’t focus a lot on design, especially in lighting, it is made up for by the scenery on stage, with light fabrics transporting us to the underwater world, and plenty of props adhere to the story, which flows like the sound of the shores.
