MUSICAL REVIEW: Kinky Boots ★★★★★

Kinky Boots

I'm going to start off and say hands down that right now in the West End, Kinky Boots is currently the pinnacle of Musical Theatre being expressed beautifully in The Adelphi Theatre. I have never had an experience that has had me leave with such a powerful message before, this being acceptance in this production - I was left beaming for hours after watching this production!  

Recently there has been a usual cast change to the production, which happens to many plays and musicals in the UK regularly, so taking on the role of Charlie Price was David Hunter, whilst Simon-Anthony Rhoden portrays Lola. The chemistry between these two on stage was so electrifying, especially in the musical numbers 'Everybody Say Yeah’ & 'Raise You Up/ Just Be’, which both are the final song of each acts and such toe-tapping tunes - for those who didn't know about cast changes, you would be surprised that they've only just taken over as they were phenomenal together and really took you as an audience on such a journey where you really care about their characters and invest in their emotions.

Talking a little bit about the music above, overall there is not one number that I would criticise for any reason, mainly due to the fact that if you take certain songs out of context, for example 'Take What You Got’, my personal favourite song from the show, as a standalone would make a brilliant record away from the production. The choreography to the numbers was also incredible - originally a Broadway musical, Jerry Mitchell, who is also the director of the production, has done a fantastic job really getting the essence of love for this show, especially in 'Everybody Say Yeah’, which technically was one of my favourite choreographs in musical theatre I have ever seen, and will be subsequently embedded in my mind for a long time coming.

Overall, Kinky Boots is a phenomenal piece of theatre with a brilliant heartfelt story, catchy tunes, incredible sets and costumes, and finally will have me returning for more kinkiness with Charlie Price and Lola in the future!
